CAN YOU EAT OAT RAW?

For some people, oat is their go to for snacks. As oat self is bless with fibre and fulfilling, it is a no brainer to eat it for snack. But be aware that it is highly recommended to soak them in water, milk or alternative milk to avoid side effects. Eating dry raw oat could lead to build up in your stomach, resulting in indigestion or constipation.

Oats are rich in the soluble fibre beta-glucan, which has shown to reduce cholesterol level. Beta-glucan acts by forming a gel in your intestines. This gel restricts the absorption of dietary cholesterol and interferes with reabsorption of bile salt, which plays an important role in the metabolism of fats.

Another health effect of oats is their ability to support a healthy bowel by increasing fecal bulks. This is due to the insoluble fiber in oats. Higher intakes of oat is linked to a lower risk of weight gain and obesity. This maybe because soluble fibers can help you feel fuller for longer.

Raw oat contain the antinutrient phytic acid which binds to mineral like iron and zinc, making it difficult for your body to absorb them. Thus soaking raw oats in water reduces phytic acid’s effect on mineral absorption. To get the most benefit, soak your oats for at least 12 hours.
